Stuart Island

Between Lagoon Cove, where I dropped Sheila, and Refuge Cove, where I will meet her again in a couple of days, there are five tidal rapids that I can navigate only close to slack water. I did two yesterday, and stopped at Shoal Bay for a fun evening at the pub. This morning I went through the next two and am now tied up at the Stuart Island Community Dock. I went for a walk to Bassett Bay past Eagle Lake, and noticed some fresh cougar tracks on the way out. When coming back, there were some even newer tracks on top of my footprints. Either there were two cougars, or the one I followed circled back behind me. I turned back frequently to make sure I was not being stalked, but never saw anything. Today is very hot and sunny again, feels great.

No idea where the name comes from, but I am anchored in Forward Harbour. The weather finally feels like summer is back. This morning I saw two bearsĀ on the beach, this evening at high tide I plan to take a kayak up the creek at the head of the bay.

PS Got back alright, no more bears

Sheila flew back to Vancouver for a week today, and I am heading south again as well. Tonight I am anchored in Port Neville, a large shallow bay well protected from the wild weather in Johnstone Strait.

Sheila and I came back to the boat on Monday and are spending a few days in the Broughton Archipelago. We saw a whale and dolphins on the way, unfortunately the weather is not very summery. Now it is time to launch the kayaks and hope that the sun will come out.

I came back to Vancouver on Saturday, today Sheila is coming back from Germany and we plan to spend the week here before going back to the boat. Yesterday was a busy day in the city with several hundred people participating in a triathlon, but I only took a leisurely walk around Stanley Park.

I spent the day in Alert Bay with lots of walking and looking at very interesting First Nation’s art like the totem poles in the old cemetery. Tonight I pulled into Port McNeill.

Biking and hiking around Sointula was great, unfortunately, yesterday it started raining again. I spent the night in the Pearse Islands, watching the tide rushing by me and the bald eagles fishing. Today I came into Telegraph Cove, a small village from the 1920s that serves mostly tourists today.

Sointula, Malcolm Island

I spent two hours early this morning kayaking around Blunden Harbour at low tide, fascinating! Then I went to Sointula, which was a Finnish Commune a hundred years ago and still has the oldest Coop store in British Columbia. I walked over 10 km on the road and trails, now my feet are sore and I am all tired out. Fortunately there is a burger shack with very nice salmon burgers, so dinner will be easy. I am sure it will not be a late night either. The island offers free bikes and I intend to use one tomorrow morning, hopefully the rain will have let up a bit by then.

The evening at Nimmo was great fun, nice people, good food and then the owner family played music until late. Yesterday I spent a quiet evening in Turnbull Bay and today I came into Blunden Harbour on Queen Charlotte Strait.
