I spent the last two days in Waiatt Bay, kayaking around the Octopus Islands and hiking with friends to Newton and Main Lake.

Today I came quite a bit further South to Sandy Island. This park has miles of beaches at low tide, and I walked for a couple of hours. I got so hot that I cooled off in the ocean afterwards, even though the water temperature is only 21 degrees. From here it is only 50 more miles to the Dinghy Dock Pub.

I had a great evening with friends in Von Donop Inlet and then stayed with other friends in Prideaux Haven for two nights. We hiked to Unwin Lake and some went for a swim. Today I came into Squirrel Cove where we plan to all barbecue together. The weather is hot and sunny, feels great.

I stayed in Von Donop today and went for a hike to Robertson Lake, very nice, and a good swimming lake too. I had to come back though as I am invited to the boat next to me who are friends from Vancouver.

Warm again!

I flew back to northern Vancouver Island yesterday and today travelled 100 nautical miles south. I had to go through 5 tidal rapids but the timing worked fairly well. Now I am anchored in Von Donop Inlet, both the air and water are 10 degrees warmer (each!) than up north and the forecast is for sunshine, feels like summer.

I am spending a few days in Vancouver with Sheila. The weather is warm and sunny, and the beaches are quite busy. Sheila’s mother is staying with us while her new apartment is being renovated. Last night we went out for a nice dinner at the Silvia Hotel around the corner from us.

Mound and Pearse Island

Yesterday I went to Mound Island, where I had always seen bears on the beach in the morning.

Alas, no such luck today. I then crossed Weyton Passage, where I always had encountered whales, and several times both orcas and humpbacks on the same day. Again, no such luck today. Now I am anchored in the Pearse Islands, keeping a sharp lookout for any wildlife.

I did some laundry and boat cleaning this morning, checked the crab trap (only large ones were female, we are not allowed to keep them), and came to this anchorage close to Crease Island. This is a pretty and popular spot, and there are five boats here now.

Old Passage

The rain cleared and this afternoon the sun came out. I went along Fife Sound with a lot of white sided dolphins and now am anchored in Old Passage between Insect Island and Baker Island, where a pair of harbour porpoises welcomed me.

I paddled around Insect Island and maybe it got it’s name from the large horseflies that seem to live there. The trap had one large dungeness crab, which made a nice pasta dinner. During the day I encountered a few kayakers, most looking rather wet after the rain of the last few days, and I was grateful for Ancient Murrelet, with a hot shower, comfortable bed and good coffee.

Viner Sound, Gilford Island

Yesterday I stayed at Echo Bay Marina and today I came into Viner Sound, also on Guilford Island. It has been raining quite heavily all day, but tonight the weather improved. I took a tour on a paddle board, and tonight at high tide the kayak to the end of the sound, but didn’t find any bears. All the rain makes for gushing waterfalls though.
